On July 8, a beautiful summer Sunday
morning, some fifty People's Voice supporters gathered in Surrey's Bear
Creek Park for the 8th Annual Walk-A-Thon organized by the Lower Fraser
Club of the CPC.
After a brisk half-hour walk around the park, everyone dug in for a
feast, featuring lamb curry and a wide variety of south Asian culinary
delights. Then it was time for the program, co-chaired by Lower Fraser
Club members Nazir Rizvi and Harjit Daudharia. The event included
several cultural performances and a few short speeches, including
greetings from Linda Walker, chairperson of the Communist Party of
Ireland, who happened to be passing through British Columbia and
Alberta
with her partner on a well-deserved vacation.
Finally, it was time for the highlight of the day: the fund-raising
results announcement. Eyes opened wide as Krishna Syal reported the
figures raised by Lower Fraser members, adding up to a new Walk-A-Thon
record of more than $3,200. The largest part of that total was raised
by Harjit Daudharia and Krishna Syal, who collect pledges every year
from dozens of progressive seniors and community activists.
The Editorial Board of People's Voice takes this occasion to salute the
Lower Fraser Club for their work on the Walk-A-Thon, which goes ahead
every year despite the occasional rainstorm or blistering heat wave.
Over the years, the Walk-A-Thons have raised nearly $20,000, making an
incredible contribution to the working class press and helping to build
the people's struggles for peace and social justice in the Surrey area.
The official PV Fund Drive period is now winding down with a "jazz and
BBQ" fundraiser hosted by the East Toronto Club, on Saturday, July 28,
2-8 pm, at 526 Main St. That's just a short bus ride from the Main
Street subway station; call 416-694-4976 for details.
In our next issue we will have a wrap-up of the Fund Drive, and a
report on plans for building our press this fall. Until then, we look
forward to seeing many of our readers at protests against the
Bush/Harper/Calderon Summit. We'll be there with banners and
bundles of People's
Voice, joining with thousands of others to protest the undemocratic
process of "North American integration," tying Canada and Mexico into
the U.S. imperialist war machine, Yes, it may be summer, but the
struggle never stops!
